Jude Law had no idea what a meme was before The Young Pope

Jude Law evidently isn’t a child of the internet. Despite playing the Church’s holiest supervillain in HBO’s The Young Pope, Law was unprepared for how easily the show could be turned into memes. In fact, he had no idea what memes were before the show starting popping up in them. Minor spoilers ahead.

“Having spent the last week in New York and doing lots of press I’ve become very aware,” Law said during the Television Critics Association press tour yesterday, reportsEntertainment Weekly. “But until this week I’ve been completely unaware of what a meme was.”

To this, I must say to Mr. Law: I understand. The internet is clearly not your thing, and I can respect that completely. But surely you knew that people communicate via things like Twitter. Surely you knew that the mere idea of a young pope would attract attention and conversation. That’s why people in your profession do things.
This is a good thing, Jude, and I hope you’re embracing it. People are into your show sight unseen. And it’s only going to get weirder. Remember: this is a show where you crawl out of a pyramid of babies in the first five minutes. You literally put on your vestments with LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It” playing in the background. It’s going to be lit.
Lit means fun and exciting, by the way. I’m here to help.
