Man City 'target' Lionel Messi backed to sign bumper new contract at Barcelona
Barcelona star Lionel Messi will snub interest from abroad to sign a new contract at Barcelona, claims former teammate Xavi.
Messi's contract at the Nou Camp has 18 months to run, but with talks about an extension apparently stalled amid financial concerns, City have been linked with a world-record bid for his signature
Pep Guardiola knows the Argentine superstar well from his time at Barcelona and the pair won three La Liga titles and two Champions League trophies during the Catalan's time as manager.
But Xavi, now plying his trade in Qatar with Al Sadd, believes a reunion in Manchester isn't on the cards - and is expecting Messi to extend his stay at the club that he has represented from the age of 13.
Xavi told Fox Sports: “There’s always a lot of noise in the media when it comes to Messi.
“He’s the best player in the world and people always want to write about him, but often the noise is false, it’s not true, and I’m sure that’s the case at the moment.
“I don’t have any doubts that Messi will renew with Barcelona, no doubts.
“Throughout the years there’s no doubt he would have had chances to make more money with huge offers from the clubs with rich owners, but his heart is with Barca.
“His relationship with Barca is idyllic and I think it will continue for many more years yet.”
